Background
Elastomer Products Limited was formed in Christchurch in 1974 to manufacture silicone rubber products for the appliance industry. Today, the company is widely regarded as New Zealand’s leading manufacturer of polymer profile extrusions for the appliance, electronic, automotive, construction and industrial markets with a total design, development, and manufacturing programme. With over 160 employees at five New Zealand sites, Elastomer prides itself on providing innovative products from a team of enthusiastic and highly skilled employees.
Challenges and Goals
Elastomer sought an integrated solution that would see them into the future no matter how big the company grew – something its payroll system at the time was not catering for. After setting pre-determined criteria, Elastomer invited a number of organisations to respond to its request for proposal and from this process the company developed a short-list of prospective suppliers. Accountant Marian Tredinnick had heard positive feedback about PayGlobal products and had read a lot about both the company and its software in industry publications. She was keen to have a detailed presentation from PayGlobal to learn more about its integrated product suite. One issue that Elastomer had struggled with when using its previous system was the time-consuming task of manually entering timesheets and this was one area any new solution would have to address. After considering a range of options, Elastomer chose PayGlobal because it could provide the integrated payroll and time and attendance solution the company needed and also because PayGlobal is viewed as an innovative market leader in people management solutions.
Process and Solution
Elastomer had some specific aims in mind for its new system: it wanted to reduce payroll-processing times, increase reporting capabilities, and fully utilise the capabilities of an integrated solution.
Business Results and Return
Elastomer says the streamlining of its payroll processing has saved both time and money and freed employees to work on other HR projects.
PayGlobal’s automation capability has also replaced the formerly manual process of calculating and entering employee shift entitlements and allowances.
Before implementing PayGlobal, Elastomer ran a very labour intensive system for entering timesheets. Using PayGlobal means that this task has become an auditing, checking and validating role rather than a data entry role.
Marian Tredinnick says that following “go live” of the PayGlobal system, Elastomer has achieved its initial aims with a significant improvement in recording of attendance times and increased confidence in award interpretation. “It is now very easy to see patterns and volumes in absenteeism and thus it has highlighted areas to improve on,” she says.
Another big change for Elastomer has been the use of the Reporting function within PayGlobal. The variety of reports that can be written has been a huge bonus for all managers and particularly line managers, who can now report on labour costs against production to identify areas where efficiency can be improved.

“Annual savings were higher than the initial investment especially around printing and personnel cuts. The ROI in year one was 113% or payback in 10.5 months.”
