Key Benefits for Mildura Base Hospital

  • The Award Interpreter ensures staff are paid correctly
  • Being able to run reports whenever they are needed

Background

Mildura Base Hospital is a private, 146-bed hospital providing public health services to the far north-western corner of Victoria.

Specialty and sub-specialty services are provided in Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Oncology, and Nephrology. A purpose-built Emergency Department provides a vital link between the local services and other Victorian trauma centres.

The hospital is part of the publicly listed company, Ramsay Health Care, which owns and operates 22 hospitals in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia.

Challenges and Goals

Mildura Base Hospital began looking for a new people management solution after being privatised. It was previously using a bureau system, but wanted to move the payroll function in-house. It was also looking for cost savings.

Manager Support Services and HR, Don Palazzo, says the hospital’s new owner had a number of preferred options, but was happy to review the solution that the hospital thought was most suitable.

  • “We were looking for an integrated system that offered a number of components. It also had to be cost effective in terms of implementation.”
  • “Other factors that we were looking for were a strong support service and experience in the health sector.” Don says the hospital knew what it wanted in a system and set about gathering opinions.

“It was helpful having a number of other hospitals in our group that I could talk to about what they were using and get some feedback. We also spoke with some public hospitals to get their opinions. After doing our research, we narrowed it down to a shortlist of two, eventually choosing PayGlobal.”

Process and Solution

Mildura Base Hospital began using PayGlobal Payroll after an implementation of just six weeks. Don Palazzo says it was a tight timeframe, but everything went relatively smoothly and the system has delivered the expected benefits.

Don says the experience that PayGlobal has gained in the health industry was also evident in the implementation process. He says the system didn’t need much testing because of the quality of the Award Interpreter, which automatically ensures staff are paid correctly.

Business Results and Return

Particular benefits have been realised in terms of reporting and flexibility, Don Palazzo says. “With our previous service we could only get reports at the end of the month. However, now we can get reports whenever we want them – even on a daily basis for Time and Attendance.

Another area where the new system has had an impact is in the number of hours spent on payroll administration. This has been reduced by around 10 hours a week based on two payroll staff.

“The whole implementation has given us the opportunity to steer the process towards our goal of automation,” says Don. “We wanted a complete package and that is what PayGlobal can provide. Payroll does its job very well."

“We were looking for a complete management tool that would improve the way in which we managed our employees – not just another payroll system."
